Huge mats of the stinky Blue Green algae have taken over Lake Winnebago.  But why is this algae different from other algae found on the system?

The Blue Green Algae (Real name is Cyanobacteri) is a living organism which grows in slowing moving water, and is often referred to as “pond scum.”  Often it can be enhanced by phosphorous and Nitrogen, which can be found in many common lawn fertilizers. The prehistoric organism was believed to be spread by birds moving from water body to water body.

The real dangers of the blue green algae are the effects it causes in pets and humans.  Stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, fever, muscle weakness, or difficulty breathing can be side effects of the algae.  Pets can suffer seizures if exposed.  In all cases, seek the advice of medical personnel or veterinarians (for your pets).   In the large matted areas, a heavy smell can be associated with the organism, which can smell similar to raw sewage.

From the Kansas DNR:  “Some algae blooms can look like foam, or a thick slurry. The blooms can be blue, bright green, brown, or red and may look like paint floating on the water. Some blooms may not affect the appearance of the water.”

In all cases, humans and pets should avoid contact with the algae.
