We are now into the second full week of sturgeon spearing and the reduction in effort is translating into very few fish being registered at most of our stations (Waverly Beach, Stockbridge Harbor, Jim and Linda’s (Pipe), and Wendt’s). A very different story was told at Jerry’s Bar today though, as harvest numbers remained steady today. Lake-wide there were 19 fish harvested today and 12 of those fish were registered at Jerry’s Bar. Spearers in this area have been doing quite well the last few days, especially on larger fish. Three of the 12 fish registered at Jerry’s today were larger than 100 pounds, including the 2nd largest fish of the season. Jason Brehm’s 76.3” sturgeon topped the scales at 147.7 pounds (pictures attached below) and ranks his fish #2 all season. The other two 100+ pound fish were speared by Bruce Donner (78.5”, 138.4 pounds, picture attached) and Keith Coats (70.2”, 120.1 pounds). Congratulations to Jason, Bruce, and Keith on joining the 100 pounder club, if they haven’t already! I wrote yesterday about the increase in 100+ pound sturgeon in the population and fishery over the last 5-10 years, and we are also seeing many fish harvested that are re-writing the record books. In fact, coming into the season, 7 of the top 10 fish on record had been harvested in the past 3 years and we had the 6th largest fish ever harvested taken this year on opening day.
