Winnebago Land got smacked this week with the weather hammer. Each day featured below normal temperatures, periods of rain and bouts of wind for the entire week. Sunday proved to be a great day of weather, to salvage an otherwise miserable week. The cold fronts really dropped the water temps and on August 25th the temps had dipped to 70 degrees, from 77 degrees earlier in the week. Another major hatch of flies has occurred.
Unfortunately, this will be a brief report this week. I did not receive many reports into the site, partly due to the unfavorable weather conditions. I spent my time on Lake Michigan this week fishing for Salmon out of Sheboygan. Here is a quick report for the Sheboygan Harbor area. The salmon are scattered and in about 100 feet of water to the north of the harbor. The fish are staged between the 60-80 foot depth ranges. Green colored baits did well, but overall the bite was very sporadic.
Lake Winnebago: Many of the same things hold true from last week’s report. Overall the bite for walleye and perch remains very intermittent. The extended cold front has really changed the dynamics on the lake. The forecast this week calls for continued cool weather. We are almost into fall patterns based on recent weather conditions.
Some good news is that the fish have had almost no pressure in the recent weeks. That may call for some trips onto the most popular fish producing reefs like Stevens, Long Point and Third Reef. Some contour trolling or long line trolling might be in order to hit key points on the structure. This is a very targeted approach, which can produce big results. Weeds will be problematic, so be sure to clean the lures often.
The Fox River in Oshkosh got some play this week. Walleyes have been taken on slow death presentations, especially near the mouth. Quality of the fish is in the 13-16 inch range, with an occasional larger fish. Cat fish are also active. The Wolf River (Louis at Wolf River Outfitters) is producing a few musky currently along with some big pike.
Also, Fishing Has No Boundaries is holding their Fond du Lac event this weekend. This annual two day outing is held at Lakeside Park on Oven Island and then on the main lake. Please be especially courtesy of fishing boats this weekend as the great volunteers work their magic for many disabled anglers whom may not be accustom to being in a boat.
