The past week featured some very sloppy lake conditions with temperatures reaching into the lower 50’s on Tuesday. The ice has a layer of water on the top, and some places have over 5” of standing water on top of the ice. Landings have taken a beating, but are still negotiable in most cases. The upcoming weekend will have the heaviest traffic of the winter as sturgeon spearing starts on Saturday morning. We really need some cold weather to get things frozen back up. Overall, ice thickness is still in the 25” range.
The past weekend featured the heaviest activity on the lake this winter. Many fishermen came home frustrated as the fish were in a negative mood despite the warm weather. Anglers are marking many fish, but enticing them to bite is tough right now.
Stockbridge had several reports of some nice bags of white bass and walleye, especially near the 4 mile marker. Quinney has a lot of activity about 6-7 miles out but the results were erratic. The mouth of the Fox River had been doing well last week, but the breakdown of the ice has kept many anglers away from this area by mid week. The area between the Chaparral and Wendt’s has had some nice perch reports on near still presentations with waxies. In addition, Asylum Bay was yielding some sporadic action on pan fish. Unfortunately there is not a lot to report this week, as most areas are very slow.
Lake Poygan has had some better action since the past weekend. Some nice catches of walleyes have been taken, mainly on tip ups and small minnows. Pan fish action is starting to improve also. The landings in this area are reported to be in bad shape.
Please continue to send your reports to [email protected]. Don’t forget to sign up for the big sturgeon guess contest. Entry deadline is Feb 13. Winner gets a $20 gift card to either Fleet Farm or Bass Pro Shops and a My Fishing Partner Hat. Please be courtesy of your fellow fisherman, as there will be a lot of activity this weekend. Also be alert for unmarked sturgeon holes while traveling.
