We Have ICE!  The past several days have provided the Winnebago Region with below freezing temperatures, calm winds and no precipitation resulting in perfect “ice making conditions.”  Although 80% or more of Lake Winnebago remains as open water; shorelines, harbors and bays have frozen over enough to allow some risky foot travel on the ice.    However, the 10 day forecast projects above freezing temperatures, rain and wind which will hinder ice development.

There have been some areas were anglers have had an opportunity to fish.  At the Old Chaparral (North Fond du Lac), a few bluegills have been caught, mainly in the very small sizes.  The Harbor in Fond du Lac is producing small perch sporadically throughout the day.

Menomonie Park and Asylum Bay have ice, but activity has been very slow to date.  The clear ice, with no snow pack, has made the fish very skittish.  Stealth like movement is required to reduce a negative fish mood.

That’s it for this week.  Be safe on the ice, if you venture out.
