A continued cool period has become the norm in the Winnebago land area. Lake Winnebago’s waters have cooled to the 45 degree range, and water clarity has improved over the last week. Occasional warm days will spike water temps temporarily but the trend is in continual decline.
Panfish have been the best bite on the water currently. Crappies have started to become active, especially in the rivers, on very small minnows. Bluegills have been doing well also in shallow bays on still presentations (dead sticks and slip bobbers with waxies). Targeting remaining green weed areas will be key to finding these fish.
I have heard multiple reports of fishermen picking up some big walleye (24-28”) from shore out of Lakeside park in Fond du Lac over the last 10 days or so. Although these fish are few and far between, it is nice to hear the walleyes are biting somewhere. The Wolf River is still producing a few walleyes on jigs and leeches. Most of these fish are on the small to medium size ranges and can be found in the deeper holes.
Since there is little to report from Lake Winnebago, here are a couple of notes from other area lakes. The Bay of Green Bay has slowed down on the Musky bite this week. Mid sized baits in the 6-9 inch range have taken the majority of fish. We hit Little Green Lake this week. The lake had some huge, tightly schooled, groups of fish. We worked several of the schools, and found many of them to be perch schools along the northern shore. Size was small, but action was non-stop. Presentation had to be in the bottom 3” of the water to produce bites. Musky action was slow, but midsized pike were active in the weedy bays. The rock hump produced several nice “short hits” on a jig and crawler, but produced no fish.
Not much to report. If you have anything, either let me know at [email protected] or leave them on the forum. Thanks for your support.
