A first meeting with any new partner can be exciting. You’re eagerly awaiting your time on the water. However, it is in you best interest to take some standard precautions just in case things don’t go as expected.
Plan to meet at a public place.
This is a good way to ensure your safety just in case your partner is not what you expected. Meeting at the launch is the best way to “hook up.”
Take your phone and tell a friend.
Anytime you take to the water there is an inherent risk. Unexpected bad weather, boating problems, and other unforeseen events could arise. It is always a good idea to let someone else know your intentions and give them an estimated return time. If you desire, have a friend call during your trip to check in with you.
Personal Belongings.
It is always a good idea to proceed with caution. Do not leave valuable items unattended, or even in someone else’s locked vehicle. Wallets, ID’s, and other personal identification should stay with you. Don’t forget to take your fishing license on the boat!
My trip didn’t go so well with my new Fishing Partner, now what?
If things do not work out so well, politely decline any offer of future trips. Typically if things didn’t go well for you, it didn’t go well with your new partner either.
Limit Alcohol Consumption.
Limiting alcohol consumption is always a good idea, but is even more vital your first trip out. By limiting your alcohol intake, there is always someone sober in the boat to ensure a safe return. Only you can control your own intake.
Local regulations.
Please review local fishing regulations before entering new waters. Understanding the rules of the water can save you a lot of money in DNR fines. Do not assume all waters in the area fall under the same regulations.
