Apparently these guys are quite the catch (heh).
If you’ve ever tried online dating, you know that people put some weird sh*t in their photos. Some dudes pose with cars, others prefer teddy bears. But a new (pretty unscientific) study found that guys who post pics of themselves with fish are actually onto something.
The study, which was conducted by fishing app Fishbrain, analyzedTinder photos used by 18-to 35-year-old men in Florida, and found that a whopping 22 percent pose with a recently-caught fish.
Researchers then decided to poll more than 1,000 members of a college sorority (because, why not?) to get their takes on the whole thing. And, get this: Forty-six percent of the women said they find men who pose with a fish sexier than those who go fish-free.
But not all fish were equally impressive. Nearly 25 percent of women said the Great Northern Tilefish made the dude smiling next to it look the most attractive, followed by the Sailfish. “Lean, powerful, and independent, it could be interpreted that a Sailfish in a man’s dating profile hints at athleticism, finess, and free-spiritedness,” says Fishbrain in a blog post. Food for thought.
Dudes who dig fish poses should keep this on the backburner: Womenweren’t into pics with juvenile carp (less than one percent of them said it was hot). Maybe it’s due to its teeny size (juvenile carp only grow up to six inches) or maybe women just really hate carp—for whatever reason, it’s probably best not to go there.
So there are a few things worth mentioning about the limitations of this study (obviously)… One, this looked at dating life in Florida, which is huge on fishing. We kind of have to assume that women in say, New York City, wouldn’t be as into the whole “dead fish selfie” as those in a region known for its sport fishing. Two, this was conducted by a fishing company. And three, researchers polled women from one sorority—not a nationally representative sample.
Still, if you live in a coastal region known for its fishing and find yourself wildly attracted to a guy’s fishing pic on Tinder, it’s probably worth asking yourself who you’re more into—the guy or his fish.
