You may not be aware of this, but our DNR fisheries staff has contracted with a commercial rough fisherman to conduct a seining survey on Lake Butte des Morts each of the last two falls (2013 and 2014). Commercial rough fishermen bid on the rights to fish and the contract is awarded to the highest bid. Fisheries staff control the amount of effort that will be allowed and utilize the operation as a means to capture biological data from gamefish, particularly muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, catfish, and lake sturgeon. More information about the seining operation, as well as the results of the last two years of sampling, can be referenced in the attached summary report that Adam Nickel, our Winnebago System gamefish (excluding sturgeon) biologist, drafted.
