Unseasonably warm temperatures have been the norm for the past three weeks near Lake Winnebago; as many anglers have discontinued their fishing activities as hunting remains the focal point of sportsmen. Water temps are hovering in the upper 30’s to low 40’s, and occasional ice can be found on the back bays when night temperatures dip into the low 20’s.
Only a few reports have been filtering in to me at the website. I have not been on the water for a couple of weeks, so I cannot confirm the few reports I have received.
The Wolf River is featuring solid crappie action along submerged wood with jigs and a minnow. Male walleyes can be found in similar areas, along with traditional river locations (edges of holes) on the same method.
Lake Winnebago has seen very little action. The perch bite has nearly completely dissipated, as these fish are moving shallower in preparation for early ice and looking for green weeds (oxygen and cover). The Chaparral in North Fond du Lac, has had some guys consistently fishing at that location. Bluegills are the likely target here. Largemouth and small mouth bass can still be found in the shallows, and noisy crank baits like rattle traps can be a productive lure this time of year.
Walleyes remain elusive, due to heavy concentrations of food at their disposal in all parts of the system. However, they are feeding heavily currently, and are not completely absent. South Asylum Bay has been producing some walleyes, typically on a jig and minnow. Please be aware that this area is a popular duck hunting location, so be sure to be on the lookout for other individuals in the same area.
The forecast is for cooling temperatures. Soon, we will have ice. Until then, keep the reports coming, and be safe in the water and woods. [email protected] is my email.
