Around 7 am on 1/25/15, area authorities received a call into the 911 center, that a truck had sunk in Lake Winnebago, and no individuals had emerged from the vehicle. The area was in the approximate area of Menomoniee Park in Oshkosh, and between 2-3 miles off shore.
Several emergency crews, including two hover crafts, recovered two individuals from the water. A 40 year old Sussex, WI man and an eight year old boy were recovered. The man has died from the incident, and the boys condition is unknown.
With the high winds on Sunday, (along with the warm weather the previous day) the ice shifted along the east-west crack near the Merritt Street access area on Lake Winnebago. The shift started at about one mile out and runs beyond the 4 mile marker. The crack is very close to the tree line which was placed in the past week.
An individual familiar with the situation said that the vehicle tipped over sideways into the water.
As always, this serves to remind all of us that the ice is never safe on any lake.
