Battle on Bago (Lake Winnebago) was a huge success in 2014, with nearly 8,500 tickets sold raising almost $300,000 for local conservation efforts. In total, an estimated 7,000 anglers purchased tickets for the event.
Eel Pout (Burbot) ruled the day. Nearly every prize awarded in the top 700 prizes were awarded to anglers weighing Burbot, outside of a few large walleyes. The burbot pushed the minimum weight for a prize to almost 2.3 pounds.
Sam Lehman won the big fish event with a walleye weighing in at 9.7 pounds. A walleye this large is very uncommon on the Winnebago System, and is a special catch.
Anglers struggled on Friday to produce fish due to violent winds for most of the day, sometimes exceeding 50 mph’s in speed. The field registered approximately 550 fish on day one. With bluebird skies and warmer temperatures on Saturday creating ideal conditions, the final tally of fish was 3,701.
