I know most of you are focused on the upcoming sturgeon spearing season, but I would also like to take this time to inform you about our 2013 Sturgeon Guard program. Each spring hundreds of volunteers have an opportunity to guard sturgeon and protect the fish from poaching at their spawning sites on the Wolf River. Sturgeon are very susceptible to illegal harvest when they are spawning along the rocky shorelines of the Wolf River. Therefore, “Sturgeon Patrol” volunteers guard the spawning fish 24 hours a day throughout the spawning season. We are currently scheduling sturgeon guards for the dates of April 1 through May 1, 2013. Interested volunteer guards can find more information at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/sturgeon/sturgeonguard.html. We are working to move the sturgeon guard registration process on-line, but interested guards can currently volunteer by electronically submitting a registration form (attached below), by printing the form and sending it to the Oshkosh DNR Service Center, or by calling the Wisconsin DNR Call Center 1-888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463).
