Well it’s getting to be that time of the year already, with the sturgeon spearing season only 2.5 weeks away.  While at a Sturgeon for Tomorrow banquet last Saturday, I was talking to some spearers about water clarity.  For the most part their reports were very similar to what I have been hearing most of the winter in that the water is very dirty.  I wanted to collect some clarity data to get a better idea, so I sent one of our technicians out yesterday to take some clarity readings.  The attached map  was created by my colleague Jake Richter and displays the locations that he sampled and corresponding water clarity readings.
Overall looks like 1-4’ on Butte des Morts, 3-6’ on Lake Poygan and 4-7’ on Lake Winnebago.  Hopefully clarity will increase before the season, but regardless I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable 2016 sturgeon spearing season.
