Slightly above temperatures dominated the Lake Winnebago region’s weather this week. Consistent rain was also the norm, which kept many anglers away from the main lake. Water temps have remained consistent, and above normal, at about 50 degrees. Water clarity is stained.

There has been a drastic slow down system wide for fishing pressure. Deer hunting, duck hunting and other outdoor activities have taken a front seat to fishing. Reports are scarce, and results are limited. I will also note that I have been in Europe the past two weeks, so I have no personal information to add.

The white bass bite is going strong in the Wolf River. Large numbers of white bass are reported currently. Water temperatures have plunged to below 50 degrees, some 10 degrees different than the previous week. This acts as a magnet to draw white bass and walleyes up river. The recent rain has also added to the flow, which is another attractant. Crappies are hanging near downed wood, seeking warmth and cover.

White bass continue to be common on Lake Winnebago and the Fox River. The best attractant has been casted crank baits, retrieved with a quicker pace and an occasional twitch. Look for feeding seagull flocks for indicators of active white bass schools. The white bass push the shad to the surface where they become easy meals for the gulls.

Walleyes have been tough to come by currently especially for fish over 15 inches. The 10 inch 2013 class continues to be active, and are a common tug on the end of the line. Look for active walleyes in and around remaining green weeds. I also had a report of the Long Point Complex being very active for walleyes prior to the rain.

Perch fishing is slow. These fish tend to be scattered, and moving shallower this season. Transitions zones are always in play. Most anglers can net between 5-10 fish per trip.

Northern pike are also in a feeding mode. Look for shallow water ambush points, especially near moving water (feeder creeks) to find some monsters.

Many anglers are looking forward to the ice season. Now is a great time to find bargains at local retailers as they clearance out left over stock from last season. Do not overlook the current fishing opportunities. This is one of the premier times on the water.
