Lake Winnebago, Poygan, Butte des Mortes and Wolf River Fishing Report 5-20-13

Warm temperatures and steady winds over the past week produced plenty of fishing opportunities on Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan and Lake Buttes des Mortes.  Heavy boat traffic was seen at area launches, and solid walleye action was found system wide.  Water temps were generally in the upper 50’s most of the week to low 60′s, with water clarity at stained to mildly stained on Lake Winnebago.  A lake fly hatch has occurred over several areas of the main lake. Most fishermen are catching ample number of walleyes on the system, and limits are easy to come by currently.  Finding a fish over 20” is a different story, as these fish are very scarce.  Many of the walleyes are associated with [...]

Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan and Wolf River Fishing Report 5-13-13

A nasty cold front moved through the Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, and Wolf River region.  Heavy winds battered the area, causing large swells on most open water areas of the system over the weekend.  Heavy mud lines have been stirred up, and water clarity in nearly zero.  Water temps have dropped about 10 degrees and are holding steady in the mid 50’s as of Sunday. The heavy winds and cold temperatures have really deterred area fisherman from hitting the water.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday boat launches remained largely vacant, other than tournament areas.  Earlier in the week, boaters were out in droves with the warmer weather.  Because of the drastic change in the weather, the report will focus on the [...]

Wisconsin Gov. Walker’s Walleye wrap-up. More Walleyes for Wisconsin!

One of Wisconsin’s favorite game fish will be getting a boost. The Wisconsin Walleye Initiative, announced on Wednesday by Gov. Scott Walker and developed by the state Department of Natural Resources, will pump millions of dollars into fish hatcheries to dramatically increase the number of walleye in state lakes. The $13 million plan aims to increase the stocking of large walleye fingerlings from the current 60,000 to 120,000 a year to well over 500,000 a year by 2016. “Fishing is such an important part of Wisconsin’s sporting heritage, and demand for walleye continues to increase,” Walker said in a news release. “With this historic investment, we are making long-term improvements to Wisconsin’s lakes and our state’s fishing and tourism industries.” [...]

Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, Wolf and Fox River Fishing Report 5-7-13

It almost feels like spring around Eastern Wisconsin.  Fishermen are out in large numbers, water temperatures are on the rise, and Lake Winnebago is progressing nicely toward normal Spring transitions.  Water temps this week have ranged in the mid to upper 50’s on most parts of the system.  Water clarity remains stained with about 1-2 feet of visibility system wide. Fish are transitioning quickly with multiple spawns occurring.  The sturgeons have nearly completed their spawning dance, and the carp are getting ready for their ritual.  The white bass run is underway, but has not peaked.   Perch are beginning to stage.  Overall, walleyes are scattered throughout the entire system and are in post spawn mode. The Wolf River is loaded full [...]

Hoinacki and Navis win BWC (Bago Walleye Club) Series opener on Lake Winnebago.

Tom Hoinacki and Derek Navis’s mastery of the Winnebago system in early May continued this week with a victory at the BWC in Oshkosh on Sunday.  The team stomped on the field by nearly 7 pounds, bringing a mind blowing 23.65 pounds to the scale.  Hoinacki and Navis won this same leg in 2012, but only by 4 pounds.   The team was pulling cranks in the Upper Lakes according to the rumor mill at the weigh in. Overall conditions have been very sporadic leading into the tournament.  Almost every team made the turn up the Fox River after launch from Menomonie Park in Oshkosh.  Many proceeded to Fremont, WI and beyond, where teams either zeroed or finished in the middle [...]
