Plans to build a lift station at one of the locks along the Fox River do not have the support of a number of local fishing groups.

The state turned the Rapide Croche lock into a permanent barrier to stop sea lamprey and other invasive species from getting into the Lake Winnebago and Wolf River systems.

George Meyer of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation says there are no guarantees that the lift station would block all invasive species.

The Winnebago Conservation Alliance, Lake Poygan Sportmen’s Club, and Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited are among eight groups that oppose the boat transfer station.

The DNR can block the project for environmental reasons.
